Manga Review: Chainsaw Man Vol. 15

By Josh PiedraMay 12, 2024
Chainsaw Man

Chainsaw ManTitle: Chainsaw Man Vol. 15
Author: Tatsuki Fujimoto
Publisher: Viz Media
Language: English
Format: Paperback
Pages: 201
Genre: Action, Horror, Sci-Fi
Publication Date: May 7, 2024

The Story

Volume 15 of Chainsaw Man immediately enters the fight between Asa and a devil sent to Earth to deliver Asa on a platter in hell. The War Devil gets separated from her since this devil uses past trauma to instill mental instability and fear along with reverse gravity. Eventually, Chainsaw Man shows up; however, they end up getting dragged to hell where they are saved by… another Chainsaw Man. When they make their escape, a skyscraper-sized devil is angry that he didn’t get his meal. Nayuta and Fami show up and help out when Asa and Denji get eaten. With the devil gone, we turn our attention to Nayuta.

She has a conversation with Fami about Nostradamus’ prophecy and how she would like to team up. Nayuta refuses… because she has school. Speaking of, that’s where she and Denji get captured by public service! Turns out, there is a faction called the Chainsaw Man Church for World Peace and it is gathering members to flight alongside Chainsaw Man which has, in turn, sparked protestors, splitting the entire city into two sides!

They are simply trying to protect Denji and Nayuta by giving Denji an ultimatum: never turn into Chainsaw Man ever again or they will kill Nayuta!

Characters

We got to see a little bit more of Asa’s backstory and some of the trauma she incurred growing up… especially when she was at the orphanage with her cat. Even though she has detested Chainsaw Man this whole time, after he saves her, there’s a change in her thinking about him… albeit slightly. It’s not like a switch was flipped or anything but there was a moment of realization that while Denji may be scum, he may not be as much of a scumbag as she once thought… but she still detests him… just a little less, I guess?

Outside of that, there wasn’t any real character development. I mean, Fami is trying to recruit Nayuta but she simply refuses but there wasn’t anything more beyond that but I feel as if this is something that’s going to be building up over time.

Final Thoughts

Random.

That’s the best way that I can describe this volume as so many random things happened from a second Chainsaw Man to Denji just blurting out wanting to have sex as his reason for living (and it actually working as a convincing argument… sort of), to the protests, the announcement of the church, getting captured, etc. Even during the fight with the Chef Devil, some of the things that happened were also just completely random, it seemed. Then again, that’s what this series is known for. It’s best not to think about the reasoning behind what you’re reading… just read it and enjoy.

And enjoy it I did. Randomness aside, this was another great volume of Chainsaw Man and with Denji being given that ultimatum, you’d have to wonder if he’s going to listen to it. Chances are he’s not but I’m sure he will stop to think about his options before deciding to ignore the warning. I’m sure his reasoning will be something along the lines of “I’ll just protect Nayuta and eat a crapburger for it” or something of the sort.

With things winding down, I can see the next volume being a bit calmer but with this series being so random, I’m sure it won’t be long before we jump into some sort of conflict with whatever is to come.
