Super Smash Bros Melee Origins Revealed By Masahiro Sakurai!

By Todd BlackNovember 21, 2022
Super Smash Bros Melee, Masahiro Sakurai

If you were to ask Smash Bros fans what the best game in the franchise was, many would pop up and say Super Smash Bros Melee. Even with Ultimate being the best-selling game in the series, many praise Melee for its simpler yet faster mechanics and battles. But what you might not realize is all the effort and work that went into making this game so legendary. Masahiro Sakurai has been revealing the truth via his “Creating Games” YouTube Channel, and now, it was Melee’s turn to get an origin story.

Sakurai notes that for Super Smash Bros Melee, he wanted to put everything he could into it. The N64 game was fine in his mind, but he knew that it was hard to make due to the limitations on the console. The evolution to disks and all their abilities led to many of the staples the franchise has right now. That includes the trophies, the orchestra soundtrack, and the much crisper models and animations. Masahiro Sakurai even noted he worked during a holiday so that he could make the storyboards for the CG cutscene that opened the game! Such dedication.
