Hikaru Utada Debuts Somewhere Near Marseilles – Live at Sea Paradise Video

By Josh PiedraSeptember 20, 2022

Originally featured on HIKARU UTADA’s eighth studio album BAD MODE, “Somewhere Near Marseilles” has continued to gain traction, most recently soundtracking the CARTIER TRINITY FOR CHITOSE ABE OF sacai campaign this past July. There’s now a new and exclusive performance of the track available as part of the video single series release on Spotify – watch here.

Titled “Somewhere Near Marseilles – LIVE at Sea Paradise,” the video was directed by Yuichi Kodama of the CARTIER TRINITY FOR CHITOSE ABE OF sacai campaign video. The proposed concept was “a special performance at the club with a full ocean view, SEA PARADISE, where the enigmatic Floating Points hears music and is lured to the club…” and so the performance unfolds in the mysterious venue. The video was filmed in July at Hakkeijima Sea Paradise and marks Utada’s first full-length video piece released in vertical format.

Director Yuichi Kodama commented post-filming: “It’s a club that you wish you could actually go to, the beautiful space filled with music and it almost seemed like Hikaru was gliding and swimming through the space which really has an impact. There were many moments of a kind of synchronicity where it almost seemed like Hikaru was conducting the fish and I feel like it may be another one of their talents.” *Staff and crew were supervised to take the utmost care to not direct the light at the fish so as to disturb them as little as possible.
