Reggie Fils-Aime Doesn’t Think NES Mini Line Will Continue

If you’ve been paying attention to Reggie Fils-Aime as of late, not only has he become a best-selling author detailing his rise to the head of Nintendo of America, he’s also weighing in on everything that is going on in the industry and where Nintendo might need to focus on in the future. A topic that was brought up to him recently was that of the NES and SNES mini consoles which sold like hot cakes when they first arrived, and people were mad when they were gone, and didn’t show signs of coming back or continuing on.

In a chat with CNET, Reggie Fils-Aime talked about how he would handle things in this “area of play” should he be back with Nintendo for a time:

“Will it come back? Will there be other physical boxes with legacy content? I don’t think so,” he said. “If I were back at Nintendo for a day, I would be much more focused on: How does the company leverage all of its great content, deliver it to the consumer through that Nintendo online experience?”

We’ve talked a lot about the Nintendo Switch Online “experience” for better and for worse. Yet Reggie thinks that this truly is the future for Nintendo given how much “legacy content” they have left to “leverage”:

“Which they are doing… they’re putting out some N64 content, they’re working with other platform holders to bring out some of that legacy content,” he said. “But that’s where the opportunity is. Nintendo still has more N64 content to leverage. They’ve got GameCube content to leverage. They’ve got Wii content. I see this future of digitally delivered content to you, the consumer, as just this burgeoning opportunity that I would want to keep taking advantage of.”

We’ll just have to see if Nintendo follows Reggie’s “advice”, or whether they do something else entirely.
