Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer Officially Releases Online

By Karl SmartAugust 23, 2021

After a recent leak on the internet, Sony Pictures has officially released the first trailer for the long-awaited and anticipated third Spider-Man film that fits into the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe: Spider-Man No Way Home.

The trailer, which you can see for yourself below, gives the basic outline of what is going to happen in Spider-Man No Way Home. Dealing with the fallout of Spider-Man Far From Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is wanting to revert the knowledge that he is Spider-Man from the general public as he is accused of the death of Mysterio, among other things. While things are on the up and up with his girlfriend Mary Jane (Zendaya), the rest of the world hates Spider-Man, and by transformative properties, Peter Parker. Peter seeks the mystical arts of Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), wanting him to erase the knowledge of Peter Parker is Spider-Man from existence… This leads to Dr. Strange tapping into the powers of the multiverse, causing chaos as a result. This brings Spider-Man face-to-face with some foes from those multiverse planes, including a Green bomb-throwing laughing lunatic (Willem Dafoe), a 4 mechanical armed Doctor (Alfred Molina), and more (Jamie Foxx as Electro).

For those of you who are familiar with comic book storylines, you’ll notice the start of this trailer, and the film itself, has the same vibes as the infamous “One More Day/Brand New Day” story from Amazing Spider-Man #544, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #24, Sensational Spider-Man (vol. 2) #41, and Amazing Spider-Man #545. The story, which takes place after the events of the original Civil War storyline where Peter Parker (at the behest of Tony Stark/Iron Man) makes his identity as Spider-Man known to the public, sees Peter wanting to remove the knowledge of his identity from the world as it resulted in the death of Aunt May (via a hitman sent by Kingpin). Peter seeks advice about time travel from experts, including Dr. Strange, all of whom tell him that it is not the best idea to meddle with the past. However, Mephisto gives Peter a deal: He will fix everything in exchange for one thing: Peter’s marriage to Mary Jane. Both Peter and Mary Jane agree and Mephisto reboots things so that Peter never revealed his identity, saving Aunt May, no one knows that Peter is Spider-Man.

While this might not be the whole way that the movie version is doing things, the fact that this storyline, along with “One Moment in Time”, which went back to that time only to completely screw over fans one more time, is well known in the fanbase as the moment where Marvel completely destroyed decades of continuity for editorial means, almost tanking the Spider-Man brand in the process. Again, the movie might not go that hard with Spider-Man No Way Home, it will be interesting how many changes are in place as this brings the official entry of the multiverse into Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Spider-Man No Way Home will release in cinemas worldwide on December 17, 2021… If your local cinema is open that is…
