Psychonauts 2 releasing on August 25, available day one on Game Pass

By Poch SaldanaJune 13, 2021

Psychonauts 2 is finally coming out this year with a release date of August 25, 2021 revealed alongside a new trailer at the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase held earlier today. The long-awaited sequel will also available on Xbox Game Pass at launch.

The mind-bending franchise has had a tumultuous development, to say the least. The first Psychonauts released to critical admiration but financial failure leading Double Fine to put the series back on the shelf. But in 2015, the studio announced that they were beginning development on a sequel and were seeking funding through Fig, an investment-based crowdsourcing platform.

Even after reaching their initial goal of over 3 million dollars, Double Fine was still facing issues with development and financial stability. During Microsoft’s E3 2019 press conference, the tech giant announced its acquisition of the quirky studio behind the Psychonauts franchise. The acquisition was a sigh of relief for Double Fine with Tim Schaffer himself stating, “Things have been almost exactly the same, just without the terror of going out of business all the time,”

Psychonauts 2 is developed by Double Fine Productions and published by Xbox Game Studios. The title will release on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on August 25, 2021

Big fan of games, writing, and writing about games! Two things Poch will always stand by--the Vita was ahead of its time and the world is a better place with a new Rhythm Heaven on the horizon.
