Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Vol. 11 Review

By Josh PiedraMay 15, 2021
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations

Title: Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Vol. 11
Author: Masahi Kishimoto (Creator), Mikio Ikemoto (Art), Ukyo Kodachi (Story)
Publisher: Viz Media
Language: English
Format: Digital
Pages: 176
Genre: Shonen, Battle
Publication Date: May 2, 2021

The Story

Vol. 11 was another action-packed volume of Boruto. Naruto is still trapped in the structure created by Jigen and it’s up to Boruto, Mitsuki, Sarada, and Kawaki… the new revamped Team 7… to rescue him! The problem is that Kara’s Boro is standing in the way and, not only does he have incredible regenerative powers, he also has the ability to produce fire-based attacks and a mysterious dark mist that not even the Karma can absorb.

Through this mist attack, we learn a little bit more about the Karma and its limitations. While it can absorb any ninjutsu, it cannot absorb jutsu that are physical. In other words, when you mold chakra with a jutsu, you are creating something from chakra… an energy source. If you use a jutsu to manipulate actual physical things in the world around you, you cannot absorb it with Karma because it is not a created thing from an energy source. This gives them a clue as to what the mist is and how they can defeat Boro with that knowledge.

Using that knowledge, they take the fight to Boro; however, just when things look to be on the up and up, Boro goes into a rampage. While he’s temporarily down for the count, they figure out a way to get Naruto out of the prison Jigen put him in; however, Boro is back on the attack. Things look grim until “something” happens that I won’t spoil but it creates an eyebrow-raising experience!

The conclusion of the battle brings us back to Kara’s headquarters. Koji gets an update on Jigen and how he is resting and regenerating. Koji previously stated that he was going to eliminate Jigen and now is the time that he feels would provide the perfect opportunity to do so!

Characters

There hasn’t been much in the way of character development (outside of the one thing I’m not talking about due to spoilers)

Outside of the event that shall not be mentioned, Sarada did see a little growth. At least for this mission, she was nominated to be captain of Team 7; however, Kawaki kind of called the shots at the end… even though he did so, Sarada had a plan that did lead them all to victory and she got to use a brand-new ninjutsu that she had been training for a while now. When she used it, Boruto recognized it immediately and was surprised that Sarada had been able to master it! I’ll let you guys read to find out what jutsu she used.

Outside of this, Boro was rather interesting in his own right. He knew that Mitsuki was the son of Orochimaru, he knew about Boruto being the vessel for Momoshiki Otsutsuki, he knew about the Uchiha bloodline and the Sharingan. He had a lot of intel and knowledge and whether that’s something he inherently knew or something that was researched and shared as a whole by Kara remains to be seen. Whatever the case may be, it’s quite obvious Kara has done their homework which, indirectly, makes them an even more dangerous group… one that has some inner turmoil going on right now.

That brings us to Koji. His motives are still a bit unclear but to want to cut the head off of Kara is a bit of an odd move. It’ll be interesting to see how all of this plays out; however, I’m expecting his rebellion to be his death flag come next volume. Shame because he is one of the more interesting characters in this series.

Final Thoughts

This was another amazing installment in this arc! The Kara arc has been really interesting but it’s kind of funny because the television anime is adapting this arc as of the time of this review. They are at the part where Koji was observing Delta fighting Naruto so they have a bit to go to catch up to this chapter. Then again, the anime kind of does its own thing and then splashes parts of the manga in where it makes sense. Watching and reading this series is fun because you get to very different stories that sometimes borrow from one another.

Nevertheless, I can’t wait for Volume 12 to see how Koji’s actions turn out. I’m pretty sure things will calm down a bit now that the fight with Boro is over. I expect Sasuke and Naruto to wake up and give us a big info dump. Then again, there might be more to it given the aforementioned unmentionable event that happened in this volume.

All of it is pretty interesting!
