R-Type Final 2 Gets Release Date, now releasing for Xbox Series X|S

By Keith MitchellOctober 22, 2020
R-Type Final 2 Kickstarter

R-Type Final 2, the crowdfunded follow-up to Irem’s popular 2D Shmup R-Type Final, finally has a release date. Today the company announced that R-Type Final 2 will see a  Spring 2021 release date. The game is also now in development for the Xbox Series X|S.

Experience the return of the legendary side-scroller series, now on modern platforms! R-Type Final 2 unites the explosive action of the original games with modernized visuals and gameplay features, making this a must-have title for new and old shoot-’em-up fans alike.

Originally founded back in 2019, development on R-Type Final 2 started the same year, and it was slated to be released on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC. Since then, developer Granzella has been providing updates on the status of the game, and I appreciate the transparency.

While not announced, it looks like NIS America is now handling the publishing duties for the game, at least in North America.

Lastly, there’s now a special edition of the game called “Inaugural Flight Edition”, which will be made available for the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. Included in this special edition are a physical soundtrack, a copy of the game, and a physical art book. Currently, there’s no word on how much this special edition is going to cost.

R-Type Final 2 Inaugural Flight Edition

I haven’t played an R-Type game in years, though I quite enjoyed R-Type Final. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to the eventual release of this title.

Summary of R-Type Final 2 (listed under Steam page):

As the latest installment of a series renowned for its colorful visuals and frenetic shooter action, R-Type Final 2 steps it up in its explosive debut on current platforms with 3D graphics and modernized gameplay features. New and old players alike can shape their experience to their liking with the performance-based difficulty system and customizable ships and pilots, while experiencing classic R-Type trademarks such as the “Force” mechanic and an addictive gameplay loop. Navigate an entire universe of new and classic stages, face enemies that evolve with your performance, and blast the competition away with worldwide leaderboards in this successor to the acclaimed R-Type franchise.
