Disney Releases Teaser for ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’

By Sara Roncero-MenendezOctober 21, 2020

The world may still be mostly in quarantine, but Disney is still out here pushing out pictures. Case in point, they just released a trailer for their newest animated feature, Raya and the Last Dragon.

Here’s the official synopsis from Disney:

Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. But when an evil force threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, that same evil has returned and it’s up to a lone warrior, Raya, to track down the legendary last dragon to restore the fractured land and its divided people. However, along her journey, she’ll learn that it’ll take more than a dragon to save the world—it’s going to take trust and teamwork as well.

The film features Kelly Marie Tran as Raya and Awkwafina as the last dragon Sisu. The film is directed by Don Hall, who directed Big Hero 6 and Moana, and Carlos López Estrada, who is known mainly for music videos and the feature film Blindspotting. There is no other casting information at this time.

I will say that this trailer is giving me major Avatar: The Last Airbender vibes. From the music to the setting to the costuming, even the weird armadillo-hedgehog sidekick all evoke the same fantastical elements and styles of a divide world at war. There definitely seems to be a time jump happening, as the animal sidekick goes from tiny during the temple fight scene to much, much larger towards the end of the teaser. It’ll be cool to see what Awkafina’s dragon looks like, and how it plays into the story. Hopefully if we’re all still stuck inside in March 2021, they’ll throw it on Disney+? I would happily pay $30 to watch this.

Raya and the Last Dragon is currently set to premiere in theaters on March 12, 2021

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
