Sakurai Won’t Talk About Games He’s Playing Because Of Smash Bros Ultimate

By Todd BlackJune 4, 2020
Super Smash Bros Ultimate Persona 5, Masahiro Sakurai

It honestly has to be hard to be Masahiro Sakurai, the man who is the face behind the Super Smash Bros franchise. On one hand, the man is BELOVED by the gaming community, and for good reason. But on the other hand, because of the nature of Smash Bros and its character reveals, everyone takes his every word as something with “weight” and “hidden meaning”. Especially with Super Smash Bros Ultimate and its Fighter Passes.

Because of this, Sakurai revealed in his latest Famitsu column that he won’t talk about games he’s been playing because of how people will interpret this:

“I normally play a ton of games, but if people find out what kinds of games I’m playing, they have a tendency to start making a fuss over, ‘Did Sakurai just confirm so-and-so for Smash?!’ These misunderstandings spread like wildfire particularly in countries abroad. I have to be extremely careful, so I don’t write about what I’m playing on Twitter, and I have to decline appearing on TV shows or programs that highlight a specific game.”

This must be hard for him indeed because Sakurai is indeed a gamer who loves to talk about video game history. Which he showed in recent Smash Bros Directs about the Dragon Quest Hero, Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury, and so on.

We do know that the next Smash Bros Ultimate character is coming this month, and it’ll be a representative from ARMS. But who and when? We don’t know, nor do we know the 5 characters that will follow.
