Awards season marches on! And now the Oscars have come out with their nominations, so it’s time to overanalyze who did and didn’t get that sacred Oscar nod.
Joker got a slew of nominations, which was to be expected, but Parasite managed to grab several outside of the Best International Feature category, including one for direction and screenplay. Taika Waititi got snubbed for Best Director, even though Jojo Rabbit got a few nods. Scarlett Johansson is nominated twice in the acting categories, which seems like a sign that the Academy didn’t have enough ladies for each category. It is also kind of weird to see Antonio Banderas in here for a movie no one really saw. And, because the Academy does have some standards, Cats got nothing, not even for original song.
The 92nd Oscars will air on ABC on February 9, 2020.
