Kyoto Animation held the world premiere of its newest original television series, Sparks of Tomorrow, at the Platinum Ballroom of the JW Marriott during Anime Expo 2026.
Fans began lining up well before the doors opened, forming one of the longest queues of the morning. Although the spacious venue ultimately reached around 70% capacity, the audience remained highly engaged throughout the event. The screening of Episodes 1 and 2 was met with frequent laughter during the series’ well-timed comedic moments, followed by enthusiastic applause as the credits rolled.
Following the screening, Director Minoru Ota and Producer Satori Senami were joined by Ginger Root, the artist behind the series’ ending theme as well as both MC and interpreter for the panel, for a discussion about Kyoto Animation’s newest original work before answering questions submitted in advance by MyAnimeList users.
First Impressions: A Beautiful and Promising Beginning
Kyoto Animation has long been recognized for combining exceptional craftsmanship with heartfelt storytelling, and Sparks of Tomorrow continues that tradition while confidently exploring new creative territory.
Blending historical Japanese influences with steam-powered technology, the series presents an alternate-history Kyoto that feels both familiar and refreshingly original. Every street, machine, and background detail contributes to a believable world without overwhelming the story itself.
The premiere also introduced a memorable cast of characters whose contrasting personalities immediately establish engaging relationships. Rather than relying solely on spectacle, the series balances comedy, drama, and mystery through expressive performances and striking character animation.
