Super Smash Bros Ultimate Up For GOTY At The Game Awards

By Todd BlackNovember 19, 2019
Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Masahiro Sakurai

There’s little doubt that Super Smash Bros Ultimate was a major game of 2018 despite it coming out in December. It sold 12 million units in a singular month and helped propel Smash Bros to the best-selling fighting game franchise ever. But it came out in 2018…so why is it getting considered a Game of the Year contender in 2019? Simple, because it came out the day AFTER The Game Awards 2018. So it’s technically eligible for this years awards.

Many were shocked when The Game Awards revealed their nominees for GOTY, as not only did Super Smash Bros Ultimate make the cute, but also Control, Death Stranding, Resident Evil 2’s remake, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, and recent release The Outer Worlds.

This is a very atypical set of games compared to what has been nominated the last few years. And to be honest, it’s anyone’s guess who will win among this set. Yes, that does mean that Smash Bros could win GOTY, it’s very wide open.

We’ll find out though when The Game Awards arrives on December 12th.
