NYCC 2019: ‘Steven Universe: Future’ Continues the Story of the Crystal Gems

By Sara Roncero-MenendezOctober 4, 2019

After the fifth season of Steven Universe and Steven Universe: The Movie, fans were wondering if we would get any more content about our favorite rock aliens and the world they work to protect. Now at New York Comic Con, it was revealed that the story continues on with a sixth season entitled Steven Universe: Future. At the panel, Cartoon Network revealed the title, tagline, and opening sequence for the new season:

The official tagline is:

After saving the universe, Steven is still at it, tying up every loose end. But as he runs out of other people’s problems to solve, he’ll finally have to face his own.

From what we can tell from the opening, all of the extended cast will be making appearances, and we’ve got Lapis, Peridot, and Bismuth are now a part of the main Crystal Gems. We also see Steven can now drive, and maintains his older form. We also catch a few glimpses of other characters, so we’ll have to see who else is going to play a part in this new season.

“Over the course of making Steven Universe, I gained this really different perspective on what his heroism meant to me, and how I wanted to explore it,” series creator Rebecca Sugar previously told The Los Angeles Times. “And seeing the way that the show has been interpreted and flattened out has made me really rethink my ideas about myself and how I approach the world.”

No word yet as to when Steven Universe: Future is set to premiere on Cartoon Network, but likely sometime in 2020.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
