Nick Reboots ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ as 3-Part Limited Series

By Sara Roncero-MenendezSeptember 13, 2019

If you watched Nick during the 1990s, you were likely keenly aware of the child-friendly horror series Are You Afraid of the Dark? It followed a club of kids who met in the dark around a campfire and presented scary stories, which were then acted out by different actors. Along with Goosebumps, it’s how many millennials were introduced to horror and holds a special place in the pop culture space of the 1990s. So, submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society, I present the Are You Afraid of the Dark? trailer:

The reboot will not be a full series, but rather a three part event that looks at a new group of kids partaking in the spooky society. When Rachel moves into town, she quickly draws into herself…that is, until she gets drafted into the Midnight Society. Gavin, Graham, Louise, and Akiko invite her to tale a tale, which Rachel does, calling it the Carnival of Doom. Much to their surprise, the same carnival is announced as coming to their sleepy town soon, and it’s just as creepy as Rachel described. Will the Society be able to take on their terrifying carnival and its ring leader?

The main cast of kids are actually pretty well known. First one that jumps out is Graham, who is played by IT star Jeremy Ray Taylor, but there’s more. Louise is played by Tamara Smart, who is on Netflix’s The Worst Witch; Akiko is played by another Netflix alum Miya Cech, who was in Always Be My Maybe; Rachel is played by Black-ish‘s Lyliana Wray; and Gavin is played Sam Ashe Arnold, from Netflix’s Best. Worst. Weekend. Ever.

Whether this is a way for Nickelodeon to test the waters and decide if this is a fit for their programming in the long term, or just a way to drum up some hype around Halloween, it’ll be nice to sit down once more and watch a new set of kids face their fears.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? will premiere on Nickelodeon on October 11, 2019.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
