Sony Acquires Spider-Man Developer Insomniac Games

By Diego PerezAugust 19, 2019
Marvel Spider-Man

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it has purchased Insomniac Games, the studio behind 2018’s PlayStation exclusive Spider-Man as well as the beloved PlayStation franchises Ratchet and Clank, Spyro the Dragon, and Resistance.

Insomniac has worked closely with PlayStation since the company’s inception in 1994, but they’ve never officially tied the knot and become a fully-fledged first-party title. Insomniac Games have developed games for other platforms in the past, most notably 2014’s Sunset Overdrive, which released exclusively on Xbox One before hitting PC last year. The company has also developed a number of VR titles in a partnership with Oculus, including the third-person thriller Edge of Nowhere and the first-person spell-caster The Unspoken.

Marvel Spider-Man

Insomniac’s Spider-Man has been a tremendous success, becoming the best-selling PlayStation exclusive of all time and more recently the best-selling superhero game of all time as well. A sequel is a no-brainer, and this acquisition all but confirms that many more Spider-Man games are on the way, exclusively on PlayStation 4.

Insomniac currently has a VR game in development exclusively for Oculus Rift called Stormland. Stormland aims to provide one of the first open-world AAA experiences for a VR platform, but it’s unclear whether this title will remain solely on the Oculus Store after this acquisition. Perhaps Stormland, alongside Insomniac’s other VR titles, could hit PlayStation VR someday.

When he's not playing video games, Diego's talking about video games, and he does both a lot.
