New Death Stranding Footage Shows Urination and Motion-Controlled Babies

By Diego PerezAugust 19, 2019
Death Stranding

Every time we get a new look at Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, things somehow get even weirder. These new trailers are no exception.

The first trailer provides some insight into one of the game’s previously announced characters. Mama, played by Margaret Qualley, has a daughter that was born on the “other side,” and her connection to her invisible baby prevents her from leaving the location where she resides. It’s as surreal as it sounds, and you can check out the full trailer below.

The second trailer features Guillermo del Toro’s character, Deadman. Deadman explains the purpose that the Bridge Babies (the babies that Norman Reedus’ character Sam is always carrying around) serve. Taken from the womb of “still mothers,” Bridge Babies allow Sam to see the game’s ghostly BTs. The pods that the Bridge Babies are carried in mimic the conditions of a still mother’s womb, tricking the Babies into believing they’re in one. The conditions also have to be updated by synchronizing the pod with the still mother using the “chiral network.” There’s a lot going on here, and you can check out the full trailer below.

After both trailers, we got an extended look at some Death Stranding gameplay that introduces some unique features. The demonstration begins with Sam resting in the wilderness. Upon waking up, he proceeds to urinate. The urination is fully controllable and even comes complete with a meter telling you how many mL of urine are remaining. The spot Sam urinates on then sprouts a mushroom, and Kojima pointed out that if multiple players decide to pee in the same spot, then “something good” can happen. The urine stream can also apparently be used as a weapon, although it isn’t exactly clear how.

The rest of the demo showcases Sam traversing the environment and even constructing a ladder to help him scale a cliff. At the top of this cliff, he runs into a side character named “The Ludens Fan,” who is played by none other than Geoff Keighley, host of The Game Awards and Gamescom Opening Night Live. Keighley’s character is one of many “preppers” that can be found throughout the game world, offering rewards for Sam’s help. After interacting with the prepper, Sam turns around and falls off the very same cliff he climbed earlier, which upsets the Bridge Baby he has in his pod. He then has to detach the baby and rock it using the DualShock 4’s motion sensor to calm it down.

You’ll be able to rock babies and pee to your heart’s content when Death Stranding launches on November 8 exclusively on PlayStation 4.
