Taika Waititi is Working on an Animated ‘Flash Gordon’ Film

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJune 25, 2019

There’s no rest for the wicked, or the wickedly talented! In the case of director Taika Waititi, this means an ever-expanding list of projects. There’s season two of What We Do in the Shadows, the Disney+ exclusive The Mandalorian, Time Bandits TV show, and the Akira remake. But add one more on there — he’s developing an animated Flash Gordon series.

According to Deadline, the director is trying to “crack” the project for Fox and Disney. So far, the only other information we have is that John Davis is onboard to produce. Nothing yet on a tentative date, plot line, or even rumors about who could be considered.

For those of you not in the know, Flash Gordon is a science-fiction comic from the 1930s created and originally drawn by Alex Raymond. It follows the titular Flash as he fought to save the planet Mongo from the evil Ming the Merciless. It had a popular serial TV show along with the cult classic that is the 1980s film adaptation with, likely, the most memorable rock theme ever because it was made by Queen.

Now, the new reboot of the franchise has been stuck in development hell, with Kingsman‘s Matthew Vaughn and Overlord director Julius Avery both signed on at one point or another. Will Waititi’s brand of humor, nerdom, and dark humor be able to lift this project off the ground? We’ll have to wait and see.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
