‘What Did You Eat Yesterday?’ Manga Gets Live-Action Adaptation

By Sara Roncero-MenendezJanuary 24, 2019

You know what’s cute? Food manga. You know what’s even cuter? Couples cooking pretty-looking food in a manga. And that’s exactly what we get in Fumi Yoshinaga’s Kinou Nani Tabeta? which has been translated as What Did You Eat Yesterday? This manga follows two middle-aged boyfriends as they navigate life, live, and the kitchen in modern day Japan. And now, the manga is so popular that it’s been adapted into a live-action drama series airing on TV Tokyo.

Here’s the official publisher’s synopsis of the plot for those of you not in the know:

Shiro Kakei, lawyer by day and gourmand by night, lives with his boyfriend, Kenji Yabuki, an out-going salon stylist. While the pair navigate the personal and professional minefields of modern gay life, Kenji serves as enthusiastic taste-tester for Shiro’s wide and varied made-from-scratch meals.

Hidetoshi Nishijima will play Shiro and Seiyou Uchino will play Kenji, both of whom are voice actors. The manga’s author, however, seems pretty pleased with the casting choice, saying: “They are so true to their characters that I tend to think, ‘Since this is live-action, it doesn’t need to be so close like this….’ I was so surprised! I am looking forward to it very much!”

If you’re looking to catch up with the manga before the show comes out, What Did You Eat Yesterday? is published by Vertical and is available through most major book and comic sellers.

What Did You Eat Yesterday? will air in Japan on TV Tokyo sometime in April 2019.

A reporter by trade, Sara is a lover of horror, sci-fi, and all things pop culture. From indies to classics to even the strangest schlock, all movies and TV shows are fair game. She believes Batman is the most fascinating superhero, and that Silent Hill is one of the best horror franchises ever made (as long as you don't count the movies). Fun Fact: The only movie Sara will not rewatch is The Room -- once was more than enough.
