Manga Review – Food Wars: Volume 7

 Food Wars Volume 7 is all about the preliminary round of the Fall Classic that we saw students preparing for in Volume 6. As we know from the previous volume, the theme for the Fall Classic is curry – so students have spent all of their time studying and preparing the ultimate curry dishes from around the world to impress the tough judges who are brought in to taste their work. Throughout the first half of this volume the judges are unimpressed and give scores low enough to dash all hope. As the judges taste food from the more skilled students, the competition really heats up. This volume gives readers the chance to really understand the characters we followed for six volumes thus far. The members of Polaris dorm have complex backgrounds which grant them unique skills to use in the Fall Classic. Can everyone in Polaris make it to the top in this brutal cook off? You’ll just have to find out by reading the seventh instalment of Food Wars.

 

Final Word:

Volume 7 isn’t as climatic as the previous 6 books; however, it really works for the detailed treatment of the Fall Classic. The author spent a great amount of time focusing on the different characters in the classic and why their meals are symbolic of other goals. We learn that Miyoko’s determination to become the best stems from her desire to prove that women can be competent chefs; her background reveals that she’s set to work in her father’s kitchen; however, his colleagues refuse to acknowledge a woman as a professional chef. This volume also reveals a lot about Megumi, who is always overlooked by some students and teachers alike. She uses her humble origins and the friendships she built back home to make a curry dish that is comforting and filled with love – an ingredient that is key in all of her dishes. As for Soma… we actually don’t learn much about him in this volume since he spends the majority of his time in the background. The author really used this segment as a chance to develop the supporting characters.

I think this was a great volume and it skilfully ends on a cliff hanger that forces you to need the next volume of Food Wars. The wait is going to be painful but worth it. We can only begin to imagine how the Fall Classic wraps up in the following instalment.
