Release Date:
April 7, 2015

The below review contains spoilers. You’ve been warned!

After the insane cliffhanger of Volume 4, we finally get to watch Soma power through the last thirty minutes of the final cooking camp challenge. After surprising everyone, he gets to return to Totsuki Institute with the remaining who survived the horror camp. Realizing he has an extended weekend because of teacher faculty meetings, Soma heads home to air out the family restaurant. He finds out that Sumire street market is losing customers to the new stores in the in-station mall. Commuters no longer venture far enough from the station to Sumire and locals prefer the in-station mall because of a new and delicious fried chicken place that sells their chicken in hip packaging. Soma vows to steal back the customers and save Sumire street market by inventing a mind-blowing fried chicken meal that has an attractive packaging and can be eaten on the go while remaining tasty and affordable. He recruits two of his friends to help with ideas and food tasting. Eventually Soma comes up with the perfect idea with tons of potential. Unfortunately, his idea is so good it succeeds… and the corporate monkeys practically abduct Soma and try to convince him form an alliance with them. As expected, Soma refuses which enrages the culinary consultant he has stolen customers from.  Unfortunately for Soma, turns out the culinary consultant he is up against holds the ninth seat in the Totsuki Institute Council of Ten Masters…

 Final Word:

Food Wars has yet to disappoint me. Each volume is exciting and fresh. I am truly interested in Soma’s ascension to the top of Totsuki Institute and the background stories surrounding Soma’s relationships with his peers. There are definitely some interesting instances of foreshadowing in each volume that have made me think “oh my god!” or “wow!” because they unfold unexpectedly and compel you to keep reading for more. Each issue also contains a few recipes that you can try at home. They range in complexity but most of them are fairly simple once you find the proper ingredients.  I definitely suggest this series as one that needs to be followed.
