After Sony and Microsoft announced that they would be removing Twitter (or X, if you prefer) integration from their consoles, Nintendo remained as the sole survivor… until now. Nintendo announced that starting on June 10, all Twitter integration will be removed and it will no longer be possible to share screenshots and videos from the Switch to the social media platform. The Friends Suggestions feature along with sending friend requests through Twitter will also be removed.
While no specific reason was stated, it was previously known that both Sony and Microsoft were being charged around $42,000 per month to uphold integration. Other social media platforms such as Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, do not require a charge to gain access to its API, therefore, cost was the number one driving force behind their decisions.
Twitter offered a response to Nintendo’s decision to depart, stating:
“The gaming community is one of the largest and most vibrant communities on our platform, and we are dedicated to enhancing and supporting gaming-related features. Our partnership with Nintendo remains strong, and we are working together to ensure a smooth transition for all users. We will continue collaborating with partners to bring new and exciting experiences to our global gaming community.”
