Nintendo Won’t Be At GamesCom 2024

While there aren’t as many “great gaming events” around anymore (and no, the ones run by Geoff Keighley don’t count…you know it’s true!!!), there are still some held around the world that are still beloved by many. One of which is coming up soon via Gamescom 2024. The event will be another chance for developers to show off their games and future projects to others in the industry, as well as fans. However, this year, a big publisher won’t be there: Nintendo.

This is odd for many reasons, not the least is that last year, they were there in force and even showed off (behind closed doors) their next console to certain developers. Many suspected that this would happen again this year, but it’s not the case. In fact, Nintendo UK sent a message to Eurogamer about why they’re not going. Or, at least, the “PR reason” they’re not going:

“Gamescom is a great event, and each year we evaluate whether Nintendo should participate or not. After careful consideration from all perspectives, we’ve made the decision not to be present at Gamescom 2024. Players will have opportunities to try out Nintendo Switch games at other events throughout the year.”

The rumor to go along with this is that due to the Switch successor not coming out until 2025 (allegedly), they’re holding back until they can do a full unveil. Obviously, this is just a rumor, but it is curious why they would go last year and not this year.
