Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered A New Climax

Utawarerumono has an interesting history. It started as a visual novel series with a grand three-story epic. There were some tactical RPG mechanics during combat, but most of the gameplay was through the narrative. It eventually got a prequel game called Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten, which was a traditional turn-based JRPG. Recently, it turned two visual novel entries into a musou experience with the ZAN games. The newest trailer that just showed up from AQUAPLUS is adding a brand new entry to the universe with Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered.

The trailer reveals just the opening and not much of the premise, but it does include a link to the Steam page that is now live for the game.

“The Utawarerumono legend reaches a new climax in this sprawling JRPG! As a shadow falls over Yamato once more, Oshtor and friends set out on a new adventure—and somewhere, amid white mists, a long slumber approaches its end.

FEATURES

  • A massive traditional JRPG! Explore the sprawling lands of Yamato!
  • The Action Ring system returns, bringing tempo and strategy to every turn-based battle!
  • Unleash devastating techniques and the power of your masks to defeat deadly enemies!
  • Fight and befriend a rich cast including returning Utawarerumono fan favorites!

STORY

Long, long ago, in the distant past… or was it in the far-off future?

The mighty empire of Yamato exists at peace under the rule of its god incarnate the Mikado.

Oshtor, Mikazuchi, Munechika, and Shunya have been hailed as heroes ever since they repelled an invasion out of long-lost Arva Shulan.

Yet once more, a shadow falls over the nation.
Monster rise in every corner of the land, and disconnected incidents spiral towards one conclusion while old comrades triangulate a response.

As their journey begins anew, they have no way of knowing—what awaits them is sung about only in legends.
Somewhere, white mists still cloud a cradle—but a long, light slumber is about to end.”

It appears that Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered will be a way to connect the prequel and the current timeline of games. It will be bringing over the battle system of Monochrome Mobius, however, rather than the limited SRPG offerings that the visual novels offered. That might mean we will be doing more exploring than reading this time around. There will be a different balance between visual novel and gameplay then. I am excited to see what that entails.

Utawarerumono: Past and Present Rediscovered will launch for Steam on May 27th, 2026.
