I’ll admit that I wasn’t the biggest fan of the PlayStation Portal ever since it was released, but I’ll give PlayStation credit for eventually listening to the audience that purchased the device and having been upgrading it. That said, the device has received yet another upgrade, a 1080p High Quality Mode, that will be selectable for both Remote Play and Cloud Streaming.
According to PlayStation, this new mode will start rolling out on March 18, 2026 (today) and will add 1080p High Quality Mode and UX refinements. Of course, this is optional, and the original 1080p and 720p are still available.
While it wasn’t mentioned, this new mode will likely use more power, this making the battery life shorter as well.
- Improved Product Detail Page: When you select “Stream” on the product detail pages of game bundles, a new UI will show up, allowing you to select a specific game to play from that bundle.
- Game Invite: If you’re actively streaming a supported title and receive game invites, you’ll now see a clear on-screen notification on PS Portal, ensuring you never miss an invitation while playing.
- Enhanced Trophy notifications: Trophy notifications now clearly display the trophy name and associated image when unlocked. Platinum trophies will also feature their special animation, bringing greater visibility and celebration to your achievements.
- Improved Search screen: The search interface has been refined for a smoother experience, such as the On Screen Keyboard display being available immediately when going into search.
While it may not seem like a big deal, when I owned the PS Portal, one of my complaints is that despite it being a 1080p device, the visuals didn’t pop and I felt it could do more. Now that PlayStation has introduced the 1080p gaming mode, it should be a bit more attractive to those who were/are looking at purchasing the device.
