Final Thoughts
We have arrived at the final volume, and the majority of it was spent with Niihama visiting Shijoin’s home, meeting her mother, their maid, and then the ultimate confrontation with her father, who had returned early from his meeting. He drew upon his previous life to deal with the CEO-level interrogation questions that he threw his way.
Normally, I would refrain from spoiling the ending, but I can’t spoil an ending that doesn’t exist. The series left things in the most open-ended way possible, so it felt like a major disappointment. How can you have a romance series with this much build-up and not even give us something so much as a confession? Nothing is more disappointing than that in this genre, and yet, here we are with a “and I’ll work towards that future” serving as the grand finale.
Reflecting back on this rather short series, it began with a lot of promise and potential. Of course, with time traveling being involved, I was naturally drawn towards it. Redoing your life is one of those aspects that I’ve always been interested in, and how Niihama used all of his previous life’s experience to help him navigate towards his goals seemed like the perfect mix here. Then, the series dwindled away from the time travel aspect and just focused on being a typical slice-of-life high school romance. While nothing is inherently wrong with that, the fact that the unique premise took a back seat and caused the series to fall into another run-of-the-mill rom-com didn’t sit right with me. If you’re going to introduce a unique premise, you should stick with it and see it through.
While the premise never truly disappeared, you could tell just how diminished it was. From the outset, it was clear that Niihama was going to get the girl in the end, but it’s not enough to imply that things were going to be fine. Readers want to see the end result; they want to see the definitive confession, acceptance, and conclusion. That’s the whole point of reading a romance series. Whether the confession happens at the end of the series, or near the beginning/middle and we see what life is like for them as a couple, there is always some sort of payoff. To deny readers that payoff in a romance series is a cardinal sin, and this series committed that in spades.
I also had a bit of an issue with how over-the-top the final volume was. Shijoin’s family was almost Disney-level comical, and it completely derailed any drama that you would be hoping to see. Of course, we knew Niihama was going to have to confront her father, but with the way it played out, it didn’t seem like the discussions were serious. There wasn’t any real jeopardy because he came off as more of a cartoonish villain than an overprotective and serious father.
Plus, Shijoin being completely oblivious to love, especially when her mother and their maid, Fukuizumi, clearly saw it straight away, was also a bit of a disappointment. Sure, it could be seen as “cute” to some readers, but without the payoff in the end, it didn’t do the character any justice. She was never made to realize that Niihama had feelings for her, and thus, it never resolved the problem of her oblivious quirk.
Overall, it’s a bit campy; it’s fine, but without a proper payoff and an over-the-top father confrontation, it knocks the quality of this series down quite a bit. If they had stuck to the premise, wove the time travel aspect into it more, took itself a little more seriously (not completely because it is a rom-com after all), then we could have had a nice little hidden gem on our hands, but instead, we have a series that’s fine to read if you want a quick story to pass the time, but not one that you’re going to miss if you happen to pass on it for something else.
Overall Score: 2 / 5
