The Story
Imaizumi’s mother dropped by unexpectedly for the second time. There, she meets Kurumizaka once again, but right when she’s about to get caught up on everything, Sasaki and Hamazaki ring the doorbell and ask if they could “visit.” Imaizumi lets them in, and all hell breaks loose. Imaizumi’s mom knows that something is up, but decides to play it cool… for now. When she leaves, she has an appointment with someone… someone everyone knows a bit too well.
Once Imaizumi’s mother leaves, we return to our regularly scheduled program of teasing him, but he has a moment of pride when he keeps pace in the 1,500-meter run during gym class, leading them to wonder if he has become more manly. They also discuss whether or not Imaizumi has gotten any more confident, and that’s when Reina begins to wonder if he’ll ever call her by her first name.
From there, it’s even more teasing of Imaizumi… especially when they decide to invoke a punishment when he accidentally peeps while Hamazaki is changing. Lisa, of all people, comes to his rescue, but is he truly safe? While Lisa is “taking care of business,” they all need to wonder who is going to sleep in Imaizumi’s bed with him, so a game of Old Maid begins to determine who’s in and who’s out, but things become more about just sleeping with him… they begin to wonder who should become his official girlfriend, stating that whoever does, gets him all to themselves one day per week. First, it’s rock, paper, scissors… then a game of dice… then they admit they’ll never be able to decide.
Meanwhile, we take a SHARP turn and rejoin the Idol Research club. There, a very conspicuous group of past and new characters has assembled. Koharu says the girls have begun something, and that peace must be maintained. We get an omission about her plan, but it leaves everyone in shock… and somehow it involves revealing a scandal involving a high-profile politician!? Uhm… What!?
Characters
Any sort of major character development was absent in this volume, but if anything, I would say that Imaizumi is becoming more confident in himself. We saw him trying to exercise and train in the previous volume, and it paid off when he stayed in second place during the run in gym class. I know that he impressed more people than just the girls. Even when it comes to the girls getting a bit frisky with him, he’s not exactly resisting them as much as he used to. In fact, during the game of Old Maid, Sasaki wanted to be kissed every time it was her turn, and he was more than happy to oblige… even when Lisa wanted to take a bath with him, the girls protested far more than he did. In a way, I’m not sure if this is truly confidence, or rather, he’s becoming way too comfortable around them. Either way, it’s nice to see him not as tense anymore.
While Imaizumi’s mother was highly suspicious, we were introduced to quite a dangerous plot point when it was revealed that her hairdresser is someone we know all too well. While nothing developed from that just yet, that was a nice little seed they planted for a future plot point. Let’s say that Imaizumi’s secret is in the highest level of danger now!
Final Thoughts
Okay… while I could go on about how this volume was just more of the same enjoyable antics that we are used to getting with this series, I have to ask just what in the hell was up with that final chapter!? So, we have Koharu calling a meeting that involves Imaizumi’s brother, his girlfriend, an ex-military guy with the most stereotypical American name ever (Jack Warren), Umeki (the journalist we’ve seen before), Idol Research Club members Eguchi and Kaho, and our favorite scary “monster,” Mari. That’s quite the assembly, but they completely hid Koharu’s plan (on purpose), and I can’t even wrap my head around why this is even happening.
I know that manga have taken left turns before (I’m looking at you, 7th Garden), but this one seems a bit too cornball. All I know is that it has something to do with the girls, and if I’m going to wager any money on it, I’m going to have to go with Kurumizaka because she’s the famous, rich one of the group. If anyone would be a target or the subject of some weird scandal, it would be her. There isn’t enough information to be had, even to take a guess right now, but things have certainly become interesting.
Lastly… all I will say is… poor Imaizumi… all that tickling, but in the end, he got his reward!
