The Story
Ichi the Witch follows a young boy named Ichi who lives in a world where magic exists in the form of living magic called Majiks. By defeating one or completing its trial, one can absorb its magical power and become a witch. These witches hunt down evil Majiks to protect the world and to become even stronger. King Uroro is the strongest and most evil Majik, but his trial requires that a male defeats him. The only problem is that male witches don’t exist.
That’s where Ichi comes in. He stumbles upon a battle between Uroro and the witch Desscaras. Ichi was abandoned in the mountains when he was young which taught him to fight and creates a love for hunting. When Desscaras is on the verge of defeat, Ichi swoops in and defeats Uroro using his abilities and traps. He immediately absorbs all of Uroro’s powers and becomes the first male witch. Because he loves hunting so much, he agrees to help Desscaras and the other witches in ridding the world of evil Majiks.
Characters
Ichi is such a fun and interesting character to root for. There’s some action throughout the volume and there’s hunting knowledge thrown around, but humor and characters are a huge selling point. Ichi himself is a huge reason for that. Because he spent his whole life in the mountains, he’s grown into a skilled hunter, and he loves it. But he has a strict code of contact where he only hunts those he can sense are evil.
But because he’s been living in the mountains for so long, he’s also oblivious to the outside world. He has to learn every little thing about how the world works and that leads to some great humor when interacting with Desscaras and the others. He’s basically a feral kid who has a great personality and an even greater heart. He’s a badass at both hand to hand combat and magic, yet he’s still a silly little goofball at times.
Desscaras is one of the highest ranking witches and is the one who witnesses Ichi become a witch. She’s tasked with watching over him and bringing him to the Mantinel Witches Association so that they can study him. She teaches him about Majiks and has to keep him on a short leash because his limited knowledge of the world creates unsavory situations for them. She’s the most powerful witch in the world and incredibly confident and serious. But like Ichi, she has her silly moments too.
Final thoughts
I’ve known about Ichi the Witch but only because of Osamu Nishi’s involvement. She’s the author of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, which became my favorite anime of all time. I loved the characters, writing, and humor of that series, so I was really excited for her new story. Ichi the Witch did not disappoint me. If anything, it was even better than I was hoping for because it’s a solid fantasy story with interesting characters and great humor. The first volume didn’t dive too much into the secondary characters, but there’s promise.
