Final Thoughts
What a trip this has been. The one thing that stuck out the most about this series over the years was Saeko and Miwa’s polarizing personalities. Saeko’s caused a lot of frustration with me as a reader, but in a good way. There were times she was overly selfish, but also scared… which reminds me… There was a reason why Saeko couldn’t ever feel romantic or loved during sex, and while it was touched upon a few times, I don’t recall the series ever going into full detail. I don’t think it needed to, though, as it gave you enough of the story to understand what happened to her, but I’m kind of a greedy reader, and the more detail I get, the more fulfilled I feel.
When it came to Miwa, even up until the very end, she was still so wishy-washy as a character. While she does seemingly get over her inferiority complex, it stuck with her until the big moment happened, and she landed a job in the final volume. That second-guessing she always did also caused a bit of frustration, but again, in a good way, but that is the level of anxiety a lot of people feel out in the real world. Always wondering if you’re good enough, how you’re viewed through the lens of someone else, wondering if every decision you make is the right one. Miwa, to me, personified what life is really like, while Saeko personified what life could be… just going with the flow, not caring much about anything, but at the same time, being self-aware of it all until you get that wake-up call and start taking things seriously.
The journey that these two took was pretty entertaining, but at the same time, the dramatic parts of the story were really well done, as it truly mirrored what some people go through in real-life relationships. It also shows that no relationship is ever perfect and that fairy tale expectation seldom happens. Sometimes, you have to dig deep and soul-search about what you truly want out of love and life, and the journeys of these two characters encapsulate that almost perfectly.
That doesn’t mean that I didn’t have my gripes with the series, as there were some formulaic situations that you could find in almost every romance series out there… such as introducing side characters and having them date the main character, when it’s painfully obvious the two main characters were meant to be with one another, BUT… despite this being a common gripe with me in most series, this series actually used this trope correctly.
It did so because of what Tamifull developed for Saeko and Miwa. They needed to grow. They needed to discover things on their own. They needed to do that soul-searching to see if they were truly made for one another. Even once they did that, there were still some doubts, but those doubts were just lies they were telling themselves because they needed to realize that it was okay to take the plunge. So, while Yuria and Tamaki were never going to win in the end, they were instrumental because they helped Miwa and Saeko realize what they truly needed. Another reason why this worked so well is that the “third wheels” came at a time AFTER Miwa and Saeko had dated and broken up. Plus, they officially dated the main characters, whereas in most series, they never end up dating at all.
Because of those little differences, it changed the dynamic of the whole “futile third wheel” trope and gave it not only actual meaning, but it also played a huge role in Saeko and Miwa’s character development.
So, overall, this series was pretty well done, and I have to say, one of the better Yuri series that I’ve read so far. Plus, I’m just a sucker for tomboy characters, and Saeko is the perfect embodiment of that archetype in my eyes, so I’m sure that kind of greased up the score a little bit here, but it was entertaining at times, deep and dramatic at times, and often tender the rest of the time. It had a perfect balance to help invoke a wide range of emotions, and while the ending was just a simple time skip and epilogue, it was more than enough. After everything Miwa and Saeko went through to get there, they just deserved a quiet, peaceful sendoff.
Great series, and one that I’m going to miss.
