The Story
After a lengthy hiatus (20 months!!), we are back with the penultimate volume of Black Clover! It’s insane to think that I reviewed the first volume ten years ago, and now we’re here with just one more volume to go.
As one could imagine, this volume was very battle-heavy as the final battle continued to rage on. It was broken down into the biggest key battles, the first being with Mereoleona, the second one with Noelle, the third with Yami, and the last, of course, with Asta and Yuno against Lucius himself. While the battles were mainly a means to end some of the characters’ story arcs, they all followed the same typical formula of them recanting their pasts, finding the strength and resolve to push forward, and then unleashing their power at its maximum to deal the final blow to the enemy before them. It was quite formulaic, but it got the job done, and because of that, all of Lucius’ clones and henchmen are down, leaving us with the final battle at hand.
Characters
As I said, the battles here served as a means of character development.
In Mereoleona’s case, it was simply her resolve to remember those who had fallen under her command and who she had trained, and to use that to find her strength. Her ultimate spell accentuated that perfectly, as even one of Lucius’ clones scoffed at it, finding it almost meaningless, but that would ultimately lead to his downfall. For Mereoleona, it’s all about the soul she put into her training, her leadership, and her fighting style, which is why her ultimate spell, to her, was the ultimate form of the human soul. It was something very befitting of her character, especially after she instilled that into Asta when she trained him so long ago.
With Noelle, it was all about overcoming a broken family. Solid, Nozel, and Nebra felt guilt for the way they had treated their sister this whole time. They knew that they had a lot to make up for it, but as Nozel said, they all saw incredible power within her; it was her inability to control it that led to them shunning her. They watched her grow and become the magic knight that she is, and they want nothing more than to make up for that terrible past. That’s when they begin to bury the hatchet and do whatever they can to repent for the pain they put her through, giving her the courage to let loose with all of her power. Out of all of the character arcs we’ve seen in this volume, this one felt like the most definitive when it came to a resolution.
For Yami, it was about his family’s history; the misunderstanding of it between himself and his younger sister Ichika, and the turmoil that surrounded them, Morgen, and Nacht. With Yami gravely injured, Ichika arrived and admitted that she finally realized that what Yami did was to protect the clan, and how she was wrong for resenting him because she ultimately knew nothing… just as Yami wished, because he asked Ryuya for help to keep it that way… all to protect her. Ichika gives Yami something from Ryuya, and that helps turn the tide of the battle, allowing Yami to bring out his ultimate powers of darkness. It’s another story of a bond reforged with family, and making peace with history… something that has remained a common theme through these final battles.
Final Thoughts
Another great action-packed volume. All that we are left with is the final battle against Lucius’ true form. Through him, we did learn a lot about the grimoires, where they came from, and what happens to a magic knight’s grimoire after they die. This explanation fuels the setup for Lucius to unveil his ultimate power… something that seems unfathomable to defeat, but as we’ve seen time and time again in this series, the more absurd and impossible things seem, the more probable they become. Of course, when you have the level of power that Lucius has, the only way to defeat it is to cancel it out. If only we had a main protagonist with that power for the past thirty-six volumes!
While, yes… the ending is a foregone conclusion at this point, how we arrived there did take one final turn on this volume’s final page. I didn’t expect to see something like that, but it did make this final battle all that more interesting.
I don’t know when we’ll see the 38th and final volume, but when we do, it’s pretty much a predictable outcome… the downfall of Lucius… and whether we’ll see Asta or Yuno ascend to the throne of Wizard King. At this point, either one of them could take the mantle, but I have a sneaky suspicion that it will be Asta because, after all, it will be his anti-magic that will save the world, and the entire point of this series from the very first volume was for him to become the Wizard King one day. I think Yuki Tabata gives it to us, which will just be one more comparison to another manga series that I’ve covered ad nauseam in my reviews over the past decade.
Whenever that volume comes, I’ll be ready to witness the end!
