Well, it finally happened. After Microsoft and Xbox had ported several of their major franchises such as Gears of War, Flight Simulator, and Forza Horizon over to other platforms, including PlayStation, the question on everyone’s lips was, “but what about Halo?” Well, that question has finally been answered, as the long-rumored and leaked remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, called Halo: Campaign Evolved, has been announced for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5.
That’s right — it’s finally happening. Master Chief is coming to PlayStation, and honestly, it’s a time to be alive for gamers. My younger self could only have imagined something like this ever happening.
Halo Studios, formerly 343 Industries, officially unveiled a complete rebuild of Halo: Combat Evolved during the Halo World Championship 2025, marking the most ambitious rework of the classic shooter to date. Every mission, every firefight, and every cinematic moment has been rebuilt from the ground up to celebrate one of gaming’s most iconic campaigns.
Players will relive—or play for the first time ever—the original Halo missions through enhanced level design, improved wayfinding, and refined pacing. The goal is to modernize the experience without losing the wonder, tension, and heroism that defined the original release. Expect more dynamic encounters, smarter enemy placement, and smoother transitions between the game’s most memorable set pieces.
This remake brings the Covenant War to life with stunning new visuals and cinematics. Every vista, alien structure, and sci-fi marvel has been rebuilt with all-new animations and lighting. The sound design has been completely overhauled, featuring a remastered soundtrack and newly recorded voice performances from the returning original cast. The result is a deeper, more immersive experience that bridges nostalgia with modern presentation.
While the classic Halo combat loop remains, it’s sharper and more flexible than ever. Players can sprint, aim, and engage with precision enhancements designed for modern controls. For the first time in Halo: Combat Evolved, nine additional weapons from across the franchise make their debut, including the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, and Needle Rifle.
But the biggest news isn’t what’s being remade—it’s what’s being added. Halo: Campaign Evolved includes three brand-new prequel missions following Master Chief and Sgt. Avery Johnson before the events of the original game. These chapters introduce new environments, enemies, and gameplay sequences that expand the story and deepen the connection between Combat Evolved and later entries in the series. It will be nice to see more of Johnson, who was not an iconic character in the series, before he was killed by monitor 343 Guilty Spark in Halo 3.
The campaign supports 2-player split-screen co-op on console and 4-player online co-op with full crossplay between PC and consoles. Shared progression ensures that no matter where you play, your experience carries across platforms. However, there’s no PvP multiplayer component this time around.
A roundtable video discussing the game and the surrounding news has also been released, and I highly recommend giving it a watch.
There’s a lot to be excited about and trust me—as someone who played Halo for the first time on the original Xbox and has been waiting for 343 to recapture the magic that made the universe so much fun—here’s hoping that while this is a remake, it does just that. Maybe this time, I’ll get to experience it with my son so he can see why I fell in love with those early games. Man, I am hyped.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is slated for a 2026 release on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5.
