Anime Expo 2025: Ghost in the Shell Is Finally Coming Back in 2026

By Keith MitchellJuly 3, 2025
New Ghost in the Shell Anime Series releasing in 2026

It’s been way too damn long since we had a solid Ghost in the Shell anime series. And as someone who’s been following Shirow Masamune’s work since the OG days, the wait has been brutal. Yeah, we got Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 on Netflix, and while it was fine, let’s be real—it didn’t scratch that high-concept cyberpunk itch the way it was supposed to.

Ever since whispers started floating around a few years back about a new series in the works, I’ve been sitting here, waiting for anything real to pop up. And finally, it’s happened.

The EMOTION Label YouTube Channel just dropped a teaser for the upcoming Ghost in the Shell anime series, and even though it’s short, it speaks volumes. This teaser features concept art for series staples like Batou, Chief Aramaki, and, of course, Major Motoko Kusanagi herself.

Here’s what we know so far: the character design and executive animation director is Shuhei Handa, known for his work on Devilman Crybaby and Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! The series is being animated by the ever-bold studio Science SARU, and it’s currently scheduled to release sometime in 2026.

If this teaser is anything to go by, we might finally be getting a series that pushes the franchise forward instead of coasting on nostalgia. And with Handa’s involvement, I’m optimistic this could have both the philosophical depth and striking animation the series deserves.

Now all we need is a full trailer and an official title. But hey, at least knowing about the new series has filled me with renewed interest, and more importantly, hope.
