As part of Dwango’s global project ‘BEYOND BORDERs,’ Vocaloid producers have collaborated with global artists to create a collaboration EP using the Hatsune Miku software. An ambitious initiative designed to introduce Vocaloid music to a new generation of global listeners. In partnership with Nebula17 through their US label, the Los Angeles-based music venture dedicated to bringing Japanese talent into the U.S. market, the project pairs Japan’s most influential Vocaloid producers with acclaimed American artists, producers, and songwriters for an unprecedented cross-cultural release.
Hatsune Miku will serve as the lead vocalist across an EP featuring an all-star lineup of collaborators spanning electronic, alternative, hyperpop, rap, and experimental music. The project brings together Grimes, slayr, MOLIY, Odetari, George Clanton, Frost Children, and XAMIYA, each contributing original songs using Miku in a bold creative fusion that reimagines what Vocaloid music can be for Western audiences.
Behind the scenes, the EP is powered by an equally impressive roster of Grammy-winning and platinum-selling collaborators. Production comes from Grant Boutin (Tate McRae), VADAKIN (Grimes), MOMBRU (Fridayy), Byrd (Bad Bunny), Xansei (XG) and additional leading producers, while songwriting contributions include Charles “Scoot” Anderson (Ariana Grande), Cecile Believe (Charlixcx) and other additional writers. Japan’s celebrated Vocaloid producers jon-YAKITORY, SatapanP, and picco anchor the project, combining the distinctive sound that built Vocaloid into a global phenomenon with some of today’s most exciting voices in contemporary music.
The project will be unveiled through a series of singles throughout the summer, culminating in the release of the full EP this fall.
The artist lineup and official EP trailer were unveiled during Anime Expo in Los Angeles, where fans received an exclusive first listen to every track during the sold-out JAPAN MUSIC VOCALOID showcase (more info with link). The event featured performances from kz (livetune), SatapanP, Hachioji-P, and picco, with a special appearance by acclaimed producer TeddyLoid, known for the viral hit “ME!ME!ME!,” marking the beginning of a new era for Vocaloid’s global expansion.
More than a collaboration project, BEYOND BORDERS represents a milestone in the evolution of Vocaloid culture—bringing one of Japan’s most influential virtual singers together with some of the most innovative musicians shaping today’s global music landscape. With Hatsune Miku at its center, the EP aims to introduce Vocaloid to millions of new listeners while celebrating the creative community that has made the genre a worldwide phenomenon.
“Vocaloid culture was born in Japan from the passion of producers making music in their own bedrooms and on their own desktops, and now it’s taking flight on the global stage,” said Gorokiyotake Orimoto, General Manager at Dwango. “Watching it grow into this new form of expression through collaborations with world-renowned artists has been an honor, and we’re deeply grateful to everyone whose support made this milestone possible.”
