Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy is set to be a visual masterpiece to rival the likes of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. That legacy is, of course, relies on whether or not he can stick the landing with the last film. And if the teaser trailer is anything to go by, he might just pull it off.
Dune: Part Three will follow the events of Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah, in which Paul, played by Timothée Chalamet, will take his place as Padishah Emperor (aka space president) and continue his holy war against all who would dethrone him. That includes Scytale, a Tleilaxu Face Dancer, played by Robert Pattinson. And if the words in that last sentence made your brain hurt, I should tell you that it’s only going to get more complicated from there.
Paul will also have affairs of the heart to deal with, as he will have to get married to Princess Irulan, played by Florence Pugh, while being in love with Chani, played by Zendaya. Oh, and Chani is pregnant with twins. I’d say spoilers, but the foreshadowing in this teaser trailer could not be any more obvious. One of the twins, Leto II, will be played by Jason Momoa’s son, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, while Ghamina, the female twin, will be played by Ida Brooke.
We also get a glimpse of Anya Taylor-Joy as Paul’s sister Alia. And if you’re wondering how she’s going to be a full-grown adult while Paul is still young enough to be fighting a war and having kids, the short answer is Spice and space magic.
This film will be the last of the trilogy, and there appear to be no more plans to adapt any of the other books. So will fans be satisfied with the conclusion Villeneuve and writer Brian K. Vaughan have come up with? Only time and box office numbers will tell.
Now, the really important question is this: What is the special edition popcorn bucket going to look this time?
Dune: Part Three hits U.S. theaters on December 18, 2026.
