Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake Gets Special Message For Switch/Switch 2 Users

Pick The Best Version For You

For many, including a certain co-host of mine on the Nintendo Entertainment Podcast, it’s always a thrill to see classic games get “new life” via remakes. Last year, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake was such a smash hit that Japan bought a crap ton of copies all on their own! Square Enix had already announced that the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake would also follow, and now, we know that it’s coming on October 30th. It’ll come out on multiple platforms, including the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. However, if you’re hoping to buy one on the OG Switch and then “upgrade it” once you get the Switch 2, you will have a problem.

As noted on the FAQ page for the game, while Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake will be out on both platforms, it won’t have an upgrade option:

“No, there is no upgrade path currently available or planned. Please buy your copy for whichever system you would like to play it on.”

If you’re curious about what the differences in the game will have on each system, the team answered that, too, on the FAQ:

Each version has different graphical specifications based on the hardware’s processing capabilities. However, there are no differences in the story, game content, or in which items can be obtained.

So, again, buy the version you feel is best, or for the system you want to play it on the most. For those who don’t have a Switch 2 yet, you have time before the game releases to get one!
