There have been a lot of rumors that we may possibly get a release date and price for Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine sooner rather than later. It has been a long time coming, and perhaps dbrand knows something, as I wrote this up after getting an email in my inbox from them asking if I wanted to purchase its Steam Machine Companion Cube.
However, since this is dbrand we’re talking about, they don’t make things easy. There are two different versions being sold, with the main Companion Cube bundle priced at $129.95. That version includes the Companion Cube enclosure, a Test Chamber diorama and Steam Machine controller skin inspired by Portal, and a cake-themed suede cloth. It even ships in a collectible box.
Or, if you don’t want all of that, there’s what dbrand is calling the Poverty Cube. That version forgoes the extra stuff, meaning you just get the Steam Machine Companion Cube itself, and it ships in a plain cardboard box. It is also priced a bit cheaper at $99.95.
And if you were thinking about purchasing the Steam Controller skin by itself, sadly, that is not one of the options being sold separately. It is exclusive to the Steam Machine Companion Cube bundle, at least for now.
Pre-orders are currently live, though dbrand is stating more expensive cube will ship until September 2026 at the earliest, while the poverty edition ships in October 2026.
Now, I have a decision to make, since I’m still on the fence about whether I want to purchase a Steam Machine. That decision will ultimately come down to how much Valve decides to charge for it, because as much as I like the idea of a new Steam-powered living room PC, the price is going to matter.
Still, I really do like the idea of dbrand’s Companion Cube enclosure. The Steam Controller skin is also really nice, even if I don’t really need the rest of the extra stuff included in the full bundle. Decisions, decisions.
