The Story
We open up with Jaewhon teaching Lunard how to stab. After hours upon hours of rigorous training, they decide to take a break. This leads them to a place of worship where Anderson’s fellow followers begin to pray; however, something is off about them as they almost become robotic in nature. Jaewhon figures it out as they have all been turned into puppets. Anderson mentions that it’s the work of Edan, God of Ravens, who is one of the six strongest Gods in the metaverse. Edan shows up, but Jaewhon initiates combat with him. After an intense battle, we learn that everything was a misunderstanding.
As they try to reason, The Union begins an attack and sets fire to a nearby town. They realize that they are coming for them, and after some convincing, they get Edan to join them on their mission to complete the floor’s objective: To destroy the world. They formulate a plan; however, one member of the Union, and a livestreamer, Beris, is dispatched. With them, another Union member, Jihan, joins him. They reach Jaewhon, and a battle ensues; however, Jaewhon clearly outclasses Beris, even with a legendary skin equipped. This causes Jihan to break out an ace up his sleeve.
Just when things are dire, we get a little backstory on a character we haven’t seen in a while. After a catch-up covering two years, they invoke a plan to help Jaewhon out of his pinch. We meet Eunsae Jin, a member of one of the most-feared terrorist groups known throughout the entire Abyss, Rupture!
Characters
There was a lot of lore and background information on Anderson; however, not all of it was truly revealed. We kept getting teased about the calamity that happened 500 years ago, and how Anderson, at full power, was almost unstoppable. Now a fragment of her former self, it explains why people are cautious around her despite knowing that she’s nowhere near that power level anymore. Her reputation back then was frightening. Although some dare to mock her because of her lack of power these days, they also know that she can’t be allowed to regain her power, otherwise, even the top six gods in the metaverse would be brought to ruin.
Speaking of, we got some backstory on Edan… or I should say Jihan. Turns out that Jihan was once Edan’s agent, but he found Edan to be lacking and betrayed him, joining the Union where its leader grants him power. Jihan hopes to gain the same power as the gods without officially becoming one, or at least that is my assumption based on what was explained. There is more history to be told here, but what we received so far was pretty interesting.
Without spoiling anything, it was nice to see a couple of familiar characters. It was quite humorous to learn what they have been up to for the past two years. There are some questions to be answered here, but I’m not sure if we’ll ever get the full backstory. Especially when one of those characters had the coin to summon Eunsae Jin.
Speaking of Eunsae. She’s a member of Rupture, a terrorist group that even the lords and gods fear. Apparently, everyone in Rupture is an awakened being, and even though she’s just a lowly foot soldier, she still has the power to go toe-to-toe with someone as powerful as Jihan. If a foot soldier is that powerful, I can’t even imagine what the officers and leaders are capable of. I’m sure Jaewhon can just stab them all in 1-hit, though! (maybe?)
Final Thoughts
This was a pretty lore-intensive volume; however, despite that, it had a lot of action in it as well. In addition to lore and world-building, we also received quite a bit of important character development on some of the new characters who have joined us since we began the Abyss Expedition arc. So, all in all, this was a pretty balanced volume of The World After the Fall.
With a couple of returning characters still a long distance away, I’m not so sure that we’re going to get the joyous reunion we would like in the next volume. We still have the matter of getting Jaewhon and Edan out of their respective binds, and we still have the issue of completing the floor’s objective. One thing I can predict, though, is that with Rupture showing up (even if it’s just a foot soldier), I can see Union backing off pretty quickly, so once this issue is taken care of, Jaewhon should be free to complete his goal and move on to the next floor of the tower, which might make things for our traveling returning friends a bit harder, but I’m sure it’ll work out in the end.
Also, the whole streaming thing is bizarre. Only Gods are watching the streams and throwing Trust around like it’s in endless supply (well, is it? I mean, they are Gods, right? Trust should be easy for them to come by). I do have to laugh at all the talk of skins being held in high prominence, though. It’s like it’s making fun of real-life games where people treat skins like status symbols for their imaginary characters. I can see the subtle pokes at society there, which cracked me up. Beris seems to encapsulate those who we deem as “whales” in gacha games, holding things like skins or rare items in high regard, throwing whatever money is needed at the game until they get them, etc. The fact that he’s spending the Gods’ money after being donated to is even better. He’s definitely a fun character for all those reasons and more.
Eunsae has proven to be fun so far. Can’t wait to see how she’ll wrap things up as the battle looks to continue in our next volume!
