The Story

The person that Jaewhon recognized was his friend Yunhwan. He is determined to enter the tower and climb it as it seems that Yunhwan was bought as a puppet in an auction and is now being held on an upper floor of the tower. The problem is that Jaewhon doesn’t know if it’s Floor 7, Floor 8, or Floor 9. So, with his mindset, he’s set to just stab his way up the tower, but it doesn’t seem as if he’s going to have a clear path.

Each floor has a challenge that he will need to overcome. Plus, a streamer takes an interest in him and wants to follow him, much to his chagrin. On the first floor, the challenge is to kill goblins and collect ten coins. It seems simple enough until picking up a goblin coin places a symbol above your head and marks you as a goblin, turning it into a PvP event! Jaewhon also has to contend with some high-ranking followers of one of the tower gods who love to prey on newcomers. Of course, this is Jaewhon, whose power can’t be measured, so he takes them out without any issues, pulls a Shadowlands, and shatters the floors above him all the way up to the 6th floor!

He is brought before The Conductor, who has quite a past with Lady Anderson. After she argues herself to sleep, Jaewhon is rewarded for his efforts on the first floor; however, one of the gods above him was so impressed with his performance, he gives him a free pass to the 6th floor! He arrives and notices a lot of challenges behind a lot of doors. He doesn’t care as he picks one and just goes with it. This continues until Lady Anderson recognizes someone from her past! Once that ordeal is dealt with, Lunard, our favorite little tag-along child, has a request for Jaewhon… to teach him how to stab!

Characters

Jaewhon has officially turned into Jack from Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, but instead of coming to kill Chaos, he’s here to find Yunwhan. I can’t even begin to count how many times that was referenced throughout the volume, but if you didn’t know why Jaewhon was climbing the tower, well, don’t worry… this volume’s got you covered.

I won’t say much about our new streamer friend because there is a bit of a spoiler attached to her, but she is certainly interested in Jaewhon. She labels him as a newbie and wants to follow him around because streaming newbies is considered premium entertainment in the metaverse; however, as you would expect, there are some ulterior motives at play here, including her true identity. Who knows, though? Maybe it’s fate that she’s following Jaewhon around?

Lady Anderson got some nice development. We learned about what she used to be, how she once failed at the same tower that Jaewhon is attempting, what the consequences are for her being there, and quite a bit more. It really brought out some depth to her character as more than someone who likes to just parade around naked all the time. She went from comedic relief to someone with an actual backstory that was quite good. It also lends us to believe why she chose Jaewhon because he could possibly help her achieve her goals.

Lunard is useless. He’s so meek, timid, and afraid that it made me wonder why he kept tagging along (I know, his faith to Lady Anderson, don’t get on me.) Still, in the closing pages, it seems that he’s finally sick of being useless and wants to get stronger. Looks like he might be coming out of his shell, but we’ll see!

Final Thoughts

So, even in The Abyss, we’re climbing towers, eh? There are so many towers, you’d think they were giving them away on a daytime talk show. Still, this one is a little bit different, with each floor having separate rules, goals, and objectives. In a way, it kind of reminds me a bit of Tower of God, in that sense. Of course, Jaewhon just powers through everything with sheer force, but when he broke through the floors and his attack was stopped by someone on the 6th floor, that made things a bit interesting… until we saw the fights that took place.

While this volume was action-packed and filled with some good character development, I’m just getting a bit tired of overpowered characters. We saw that with Jinwoo in Solo Leveling, and as far back as Kirito in Sword Art Online. There truly has been a trend of just sending overpowered characters into dungeons, towers, realms, whatever your flavor is, and just have them annihilate everything. Sure, it gives you an adrenaline rush to watch these characters just obliterate everything in sight, but it gets old after a while. I’d like to see Jaewhon run into a challenge he needs to retreat from to give some sort of drama or depth.

In every situation he’s put into, I don’t feel a sense of worry or danger. You could sit there and tell me that his foe is an Elder God older than Time, who was responsible for the rise and fall of the world, which he holds ultimate power ove,r and Jaewhon will just stab one and send him through the nearest wall. At least, that’s the impression that I get. It’s like Saitama saying “Ok” to Boros after he shed his limiting armor.

In any event, it looks like Lunard is getting some training as we may be taking a break from climbing the tower… that is until Jaewhon acts like Maude Flanders and yells “WONT SOMEONE PLEASE THINK IG YUNHWAN!?”
