Baldur’s Gate 3 Has Crossed 20 Million Units Sold

They did the work and are still reaping the rewards.

Sometimes, a video game drops that you have no real expectations for at first, but then, you hear how great it is from others, and suddenly, everyone is talking about it. In 2023, that was Baldur’s Gate 3. The team at Larian Studios had already done great work with games like Divinity: Original Sin 2, but this was the title that helped them step into the spotlight and showcase what they could do. They took things slow, built the title up on Steam Early Access, and then, once the game was out, they kept working on it until they finally felt they were done.

The rewards for their efforts were numerous, not the least of which was getting “Game of the Year” at many shows, including The Game Awards. It was also a huge sales hit. In fact, in a recent interview with Bloomberg, Larian CEO Swen Vincke revealed that Baldur’s Gate 3 has officially sold over 20 million units. That’s pretty dang good for a title no one had expectations of going into 2023.

That success will lead to its next title, which will bring Larian back to the Divinity series, and Vincke isn’t afraid to hype it up a bit:

“This is going to be us unleashed, I think. It’s a turn-based RPG featuring everything you’ve seen from us in the past, but it’s brought to the next level.”

We’ll have to see where everything goes from here, but if Swen and his crew maintain the consistency and quality they are known for, they’ll have a GOTY contender for sure.
