Streaming culture and parasocial relationships each have their sides to them, and NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE looks to expose it all and then some. It’s an interesting concept about the world of streaming and how popularity is everything in it. In today’s modern age, it’s almost as if this show was perfectly timed, but can it hit all the right notes and deliver something beyond what many other streaming shows have already accomplished?

First Episode Synopsis
OMGkawaiiAngel, or KAngel for short, is one of the world’s most popular streamers who has hit 10 million followers. Her latest concert was filled to the brim with stans who would do anything to see her show. Even one guy who was about to jump off a roof and commit suicide due to being harassed by his boss was moved enough by KAngel to not go through with it, but KAngel is anything but an angel.
Later in the show, we see her getting interviewed, and they talked about taking excessive medicine on stream, another stream where she had a massive crash out, and how the world is beginning to view her as a detriment to society, and a horrible influence on children who are growing up with this always-connected digital age… and she responds that she doesn’t care one bit. She says that she provides entertainment, and how people view her, if they try to pattern themselves after her, those are not her decisions, and she doesn’t feel responsible for any of it.
In her world, followers matter. Likes matter. Engagement matters. All of those numbers need to go up and up and up, because if they don’t, the world forgets about you and moves on to something else. The same is true for her age. When she stops being young, the world moves on to someone else, but she intends to use her youth to get the most out of her followers until she can’t anymore. That’s your “angel.”
On the flipside, we have a café worker named Kache. Her life isn’t as glamorous as it could be, either. Always getting hit on by customers and coming home to a freeloading boyfriend who just sits around and plays online games all day, begins to take its toll on her mentally. Plus, judging from the aftermath of a “romantic encounter,” it doesn’t seem as if he’s the sensitive type.
And finally, we have a streaming group named Karamazov that has only one goal… to overtake KAngel.
Worth Watching?
MAYBE – While I could follow the story, it wasn’t immediately intuitive, and that is because of the decision to do a lot of visual and symbolic storytelling. At first, I wasn’t sure if I was looking at a virtual world or the real world, but it soon became obvious that these characters exist in the real world, but the depiction of the world around them is merely symbolic. It’s an interesting form of storytelling for sure, but it did make it a little difficult to follow until you got used to it.
While I am going to continue to watch the show because I enjoyed the first episode, I slapped the MAYBE tag on this because the themes in this show are not for everyone. Suicide, drug usage, overdosing, and rape are all presented here, and some people will find these situations rather uncomfortable. If they don’t bother you, then I would recommend checking this show out because it takes streaming and parasocial culture and presents the ugly dark side of it in the grittiest way possible while dressing it up in flashy neon colors.
From the synopsis, I knew that I was getting into a show about streaming, but what I actually got was something far greater than I had expected. At first, I didn’t know if I was going to enjoy it, but in the end, I wanted more.
