What if you were so engrossed with someone that you spent every waking moment of your life thinking about them, but then took it to a whole new level and did that with a friend who equally adored the same person? That is the premise for Kirio Fanclub, which means we are bound to get plenty of awkward and cringe moments as another romantic comedy throws its name into the sea of countless others. Being around the block a time or five hundred in this genre, I just had to check it out, but was a comedy about obsession something that could offer up some good entertainment?
Let’s go!
First Episode Synopsis
Aimi and Nami are two girls who are absolutely obsessed with a boy named Kirio, and for the first half of this episode, you get to see just how obsessed they are with him. From practicing how to ask him questions, to talking about being in the presence of his farts, to playing games to determine who can return his forgotten jacket to him, these two have Kirio on the brain 24/7.
In the second half of the episode, the weirdness continues as Aimi talks about a date she went on with Kirio; however, she was simply describing a dream… a dream in which she recites mantras over and even covers her face with a sheet that has Kirio’s name written all over it, all in hopes of manifesting a dream about him. Well, I guess it worked because she had a wonderful dream of drinking melon soda until Kirio’s giant ice cube exploded, which turned into a monkey eating a castella cake. Aimi claimed that Nami was in the dream, too, where she tripped and fell over nothing.
As they were leaving school, they looked out the front doors to see a monkey eating a castella cake… and then as they took a step forward, Nami tripped over nothing and fell. What made matters worse was that Kirio and one of his friends showed up. Thinking it was fate, Kirio is about to ask Aimi a question, but her dreams end there when he wanted to know if she ever counted the moles on her body….
….
….what?
Shortly after that… the episode ended.
Worth Watching?
YES – The funny thing is, this was a manga series that I had read the synopsis for, and wanted to pick up and review. The first volume was due to come out later this month, but then I saw that it had received a TV anime, so I decided to jump the gun and give this a watch just to see what I would be getting myself into. Needless to say, I am glad that I did because the level of weirdness in here was right up my alley in terms of comedy.
Some girls are obsessed, and then there are these two. Aimi and Nami are beyond obsessed with Kirio, but what makes everything great is that we don’t know WHY they are so obsessed. In fact, I was almost certain that we were going to go the entire first episode without even seeing Kirio, and if we hadn’t, that would have made things so much better because then you would be guessing whether or not Kirio even existed, but alas, we did get to see him, so we know that he’s real, but aside from being an athlete, I’m not quite understanding why these two have such an unhealthy obsession with him, and that’s the hook that the show offers to you.
To keep you guessing like that is part of the comedy, but the comedy itself is amazing. Aimi and Nami just hold these random conversations where nothing is off the table. One moment, they can be innocently talking about how to approach him and ask him basic questions, then the next, they are discussing his farts in detail. I mean, they wondered what it would be like to be in the vicinity of one, how loud it could be, if it would be louder than an explosion, if his farts would be golden since they revere Kirio as a god, and so forth.
The randomness of everything that happened in Aimi’s dream was also another “what the hell?” moment that you couldn’t help but laugh at. Needless to say, I really enjoyed this first episode, and while this is the kind of show that could get stale pretty quickly, I have a feeling that after all of the insane moments we’ve had so far, there isn’t going to be any shortage of awkward moments and laughs as a result of those moments. With how open they talk about him, I’m just waiting for the moment when Kirio walks in on one of their discussions. You know it’s going to happen, and when it does, it’s going to be glorious.
If you’re looking for a great romantic comedy to pick up, I think Kirio Fanclub is going to get the job done for you.
