Resident Evil movie franchise getting a reboot already!?

Just like the undead from the classic survival-horror video game, the Resident Evil movies are rising up from the dead to begin their shamble into production once again.

Variety reports that Constantin Film is looking to reboot the franchise, though further specifics were not given. Instead of using former Resident Evil movie director Paul W.S. Anderson, according to Deadline, Constantin Film is looking to have The Conjuring‘s James Wan producing the film while Greg Russo has been tapped to help write the reboot. Russo and Wan worked with one another on the upcoming Mortal Kombat film reboot.

It’s also alleged that the RE reboot will feature an entirely new cast… Thank god.

According to Constantin Film board chairman Martin Moszkowicz, the goal is to milk six movies out of the deal, which is the same number as the original series. While it might sound sudden, it’s not really surprising they’d want to bring back this series. The original franchise brought in $US1.2 ($2)-billion worldwide, and it’s the highest-grossing film series based on a video game.

The latest in the franchise, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, was released back in January 2017 and stars Milla Jovovich. The film was not all that great (You can read our review here) but it did pull in $312.2 million at the box office, making it a financial success for the studio even if it wasn’t a critical success.

Capcom is in charge of its own, animated set of feature films, which are much better. The latest of which, Resident Evil: Vendetta, will be released this month.
