Splatoon 2 Receives Manga

By Josh PiedraFebruary 16, 2017
Splatoon 2

In Shogakukan’s Coro Coro Comics magazine, a one-shot manga was published in a pamphlet based off Nintendo’s upcoming Switch title Splatoon 2. The one-shot made an announcement at the end that stated a serialization of the manga is coming “soon.”  While no other information has been released, including a release date, it does confirm that Splatoon 2 will be receiving a full manga series adaptation.

The one-shot was drawn by Sankichi Hinodeya, who will be continuing on with the remainder of the series. Splatoon 2 is slated for release on Nintendo Switch later this summer.

The first Splatoon game was released for the Nintendo Wii U system back in May 2015. The game centers on characters called inklings who can transform between human and squid forms. The gameplay involves inklings painting the battlefield in different color inks. Whichever team can paint the opposing team’s territory in their respective paint colors is declared the winner. Fans have opening embraced the game, calling it one of the Wii U’s best titles.  There was much excitement among Nintendo fans when the sequel was announced for the Nintendo Switch console.

The Nintendo Switch console recently announced that it will support local LAN gaming sessions.  Couples with the fact that Splatoon was depicted in an e-Sports environment, many fans are excited about the multiplayer possibilities with the latest entry into the series.

The original Splatoon game received two different manga adaptations. Kino Takahashi launched the Honobono Ika 4-Koma manga, while different manga creators all contributed stories to the Play Manga. Hinodeya also published a one-shot manga based on the first Splatoon game in Coro Coro Comics back in May 2015.  Nintendo previously collaborated with Squid Girl manga author Masahiro Anbe to help promote the first game.
