New Top NES Games Released By Rolling Stone

By Todd BlackOctober 12, 2025
Nintendo Entertainment System, Top NES Games

One of the reasons that Nintendo has lasted so long is that even when they make a “subpar system,” they make an incredible set of games that even the haters would struggle to “lessen” in some way. Then, when you get to the all-time classics, you realize that The Big N has been doing great for decades, and as the Nintendo Switch 2 will attest, it’s set for many more years of gaming greatness. Yet, it all started with the Nintendo Entertainment System, and the “Top NES Games” are something that is still talked about to this day, including by magazines like Rolling Stone.

They made a special list breaking down what they felt were the best games from the console, and it’s hard to deny some of the picks they made. Check out their Top 20 below:

1) Super Mario Bros. 3
2) Mega Man 2
3) Super Mario Bros.
4) The Legend of Zelda
5) Ninja Gaiden
6) Castlevania III
7) Metroid
8) Contra
9) Dragon Quest III
10) Punch-Out!!
11) Life Force
12) Duck Hunt
13) R.C. Pro-Am
14) StarTropics
15) Super Dodge Ball
16) Excitebike
17) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: Manhattan Project
18) Blaster Master
19) Bionic Commando
20) Tecmo Super Bowl

It’s exciting going through this list and recalling various memories of either playing these games, knowing people who played these games, or reveling in the titles that came after, because these titles kicked off or continued amazing franchises. Thus, regardless of whether you don’t think these are the “Top NES Games,” you have to admit that the list does hit a lot of the highlights. If you think you know what titles deserve to be on this list that weren’t named, let us know in the comments below!
