Without a doubt, the most talked-about console in 2025 is the Nintendo Switch 2. From its leaks, to its initial reveal, to the first Nintendo Direct, its prices for the system and its game, it’s “Game of the Year” nominee, and the upcoming holiday lineup, there’s been plenty to discuss. The other thing that has been discussed a lot is its record-breaking sales. We’re officially in month five of its life, and during the first four months, the console has sold extremely well. The latest financial quarter sales from Nintendo likely won’t drop for a few more weeks; however, US sales for August have just been unveiled.
This comes from Mat Piscatella of Circana, who calculates the various sales figures for both hardware and software in the US each month. Mat shared the key stats for the Nintendo Switch 2 in August, and they make it clear it’s still selling well:
Hardware – With 2.4M units sold LTD over its first 3 months market, Nintendo Switch 2 is now 5% ahead of the previous record setting pace of PlayStation 4, which sold 2.2M units during the 3 months ending January 2014.

Just to be clear, that “first 3 months” references June, July, and August. That means the September numbers have yet to be calculated, and October will be a big month for the Switch 2, thanks to the release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A in eight days. As if that wasn’t enough, the Switch 2 is leagues above where the OG Switch was in its first three months of life in the US:
Hardware – Nintendo Switch 2 unit sales are trending 77% ahead the time-aligned sales of the original Nintendo Switch.

All told, the console is doing well, especially since we know it’s already sold over 2 million in Japan, and well over 6 million overall. Hopefully, some new sales figures will drop in soon to make it clearer how things are going with the system.
