We’re still VERY early into the life of the Nintendo Switch 2, and as such, we still don’t know the “upper limits” of what the game can do. We know via games like Mario Kart World that it can handle large, interconnected worlds and even seamless transitions. Then, with games like Donkey Kong Bananza, we know that the game can do environmental destruction with ease and make it look beautiful. Even still, we don’t have a gauge of its graphical limits yet. However, Final Fantasy VII Remake may serve as the first “Litmus Test” for its capabilities.
Over at Gamescom, Final Fantasy VII Remake had a demo available for play on the Switch 2. During that time, Digital Foundry did a “test run” with it and apparently had high praise for it:
Digital Foundry is impressed with FF VII Remake on Switch 2:"I'm just going to say it: Right now, this is the best-looking thing I've seen on Switch 2. Seeing that game running at a stable 30 frames per second, with that excellent motion blur, it looked fantastic."Source: DF Direct Weekly #228

So, why does this matter? Well, like with many generations of Nintendo consoles, many wonder if games will “look as good as they do on other systems” if they’re ported over. This could be the proof, or the first bit of proof, that if you do things properly, you can get it to look as good as you want. That’s good news, as Square Enix is likely to bring Rebirth to the console eventually, and many will want it to look just as good.
Plus, for other 3rd party developers, they’ll want a “benchmark” of sorts to highlight just how much they can push things on the system. Then, for gamers, they’ll have something to look forward to in the future, because once a benchmark is reached, they know that there will be teams that try to push past it, or will use that benchmark to make their games look as amazing as possible.
With this game getting a demo at PAX West this week, we could hear more soon!
