Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Team Tease How Far Future Sequels Could Go

If you keep making them with clear quality? Have at it!

It’s honestly incredible to see how far we’ve come since the infamous first trailer for Sonic’s live-action movie. It was almost a disaster that literally forced a massive redesign that saved everything. Fast forward to now, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is already over $100 million at the domestic box office and is beginning its international run, and Sonic 4 has already been confirmed. That’s fast results right there. The third film brought in several key characters from Sonic lore, and the 4th film already has two confirmations of who will show up. So, the question now is, “Just how far will they take this?”

The two writers of the latest film, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, talked with Collider about just that.

“It’s such an obvious answer, but it’s crazy that we’re three movies in and we keep bringing in essentially two new characters in each seque. And we still know that fans are saying, ‘When are we going to get to see so and so? What about this one?’ So it’s not hard to imagine there can be easily several more sequels and keep expanding the universe. The franchise has not done a whole lot really into the idea of where Sonic came from. I mean, I know Sega has their specific parameters on what to do with that, but there’s still so much room for it to grow.”

As many of you know by now, the end credits for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 featured the arrival of Metal Sonic and Amy Rose. Casey noted that part of the reason that things have gone so smoothly is because of the partnership with SEGA:

“I feel like these movies, as they continue to succeed, we’re also earning more and more leeway from Sega as they trust us more and more. Sega have been great partners. Someday we’re gonna get Big the Cat into these things. That’s where this is all going.”

That last line was apparently a joke, yet we almost had a Big the Cat cameo in the 2nd film. Let’s just hope we can dodge that particular bullet. Or, you know, they could just make a Smash Bros movie universe…
