Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Will Not Have DLC As Team Hopes to Release Part 3 ASAP

Final Fantasy VII

After this year’s release of the thrilling Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, part two of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, players eagerly await the third and final game. And it looks like it might come sooner rather than later. In an exclusive interview with Daily Star, director Naoki Hamaguchi announced that Rebirth will not have DLC. This is in order to ensure that part 3 arrives “as soon as possible.”

This may surprise some players since Final Fantasy VII Remake, part one of the trilogy, did in fact have DLC. That expansion, entitled INTERmission, introduced characters to Yuffie Kisaragi, a ninja who would then reappear in Rebirth. So there is precedent for Final Fantasy VII DLC. Just don’t expect it this time around. Though Hamaguchi acknowledges the desire for more DLC in his decision:

“We definitely do hear the desire from fans, the voices out there that want that kind of thing. I understand it completely, but I think, from my perspective, what the fans really want to see the most is not necessarily DLC. They want to see the third part of the series as quickly as possible.”

While the lack of Rebirth DLC may be a bummer to some, other players may appreciate the expedited release of Part 3. In our review of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, we gave the game a perfect score and wondered how the third part will top it.

Players also eagerly await part 3 for a different reason. Without going into spoilers, Rebirth ends on quite a cliffhanger. If you do want to know more, you can read about the ending here. Either way, it would likely be tough to make DLC when so many questions are up in the air. Developers probably want to save these big answers for part 3.

So when would part 3 arrive? Even without DLC, not for a while. Rebirth came out four years after Remake, with one year devoted to development on INTERmission. If that’s anything to go by, it suggests that part 3 may arrive in 2027 instead of 2028, as explained here. A year early is still a year early.

In the meantime, for those who have purchased a PS5 Pro, now’s a great time to play or replay Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The game has recently been optimized for play on the new console. It recently received a new Versatility Mode, combining the pre-existing Graphics and Performances Modes for use on the PS5 Pro.
