Move over, Fallout London, there’s a new Brit-apocalypse game in town. Rebellion Developments has announced Atomfall for a March 27th, 2025 release date. Set in an alternate version of the 1960s, Atomfall takes place in a radioactive quarantine zone in the UK.
Check out out the latest trailer for Atomfall below. While the description of the game sounds a bit like Fallout, the lush and eerie environments are a bit more evocative of survival games like The Forest and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The trailer doesn’t show off too much gameplay, but showcases the intriguing design.
Rebellion describes Atomfall thusly:
A survival-action game inspired by real-life events, Atomfall is set five years after the Windscale nuclear disaster in Northern England. Explore the fictional quarantine zone, scavenge, craft, barter, fight and talk your way through a British countryside setting filled with bizarre characters, mysticism, cults, and rogue government agencies.
In case you’re wondering about the real-life events, a nuclear accident really did occur at the Windscale site in Britain’s Lake District. When a reactor cartridge seemingly burst, operators opted to turn up the fans on the morning of October 10th, 1957. Unknown to them, the cartridge had caught fire. So the fans quite literally fanned the flames, causing a fire that raged for over fifteen hours. With the reactor on fire and releasing radioactive fallout, it led to the worst nuclear accident in UK history.
In reality, the fire fighters were able to extinguish the fire after a variety of attempts. So there are no irradiated cults lurking in the Lake District (as far as we know). Presumably, Atomfall takes place in a reality where the Windscale piles were not extinguished in time. This likely lead to a greater catastrophe paving the way for military encampments, abandoned bunkers, and Pagan ruins.
We’ll find out for soon when Atomfall comes out on March 27th, 2025 for Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC. The game will come out for Gamepass day one.
