Gundam Build Metaverse anime to air in October 2023

By Keith MitchellMay 10, 2023

Today, Bandai Namco and Sunrise have revealed when the next Gunpla-based anime, Gundam Build Metaverse, will be watchable. According to a recent trailer that is viewable on the Gundam Info channel on YouTube, the series will start to air on October 2023.

This new show will follow newcomer Houjyou Rio, who is interested in Gunpla Battle and is playing it just for fun. This series will be considerably shorter, unlike Gundam Build Fighters and Gundam Build Divers, and will only consist of three episodes. There’s no mention of how long each episode will run.

What I do find interesting is that instead of using new music for the show, we’re getting one of the favorite things from Gundam Build Fighters/Try. Is this trying to tell us something? Well, the synopsis does say that the lead character (and team) will encounter some past champions. Initially, I didn’t know who we’d see, but thanks to Bandai Namco revealing new (old) Gunpla, we know that at least Sekai Kamiki from Build Fighters Try, Sei Iori from Gundam Build Fighters, and Riku Mikami from Gundam Build Divers.

Here’s a synopsis of the show.

A new Internet service has been born in the world of Gunpla. Within the Metaverse realm, the user can control their own avatar, interact with other users, play Gunpla Battle, and purchase actual Gunpla. Rio Hojo is a boy who has dived into this new world. Studying Gunpla building techniques in the real world with Seria Urutuski, and absorbing Gunpla Battle know-how from Mask Lady in the Metaverse world, he has been honing his skills day by day. After completing his own original Gunpla, the Lah Gundam, Rio happens to encounter some past champions of Gunpla Battle in the Metaverse realm.

It wouldn’t be a new Gundam anime without a few new Gundams, and here, we get to see several custom builds. The one on the left is the Ra Gundam is Houjyou Rio’s custom build and looks to be modeled on the RX-78-2 Gundam. While the one in the middle is another Barbatos… we can’t get away from the thing. The SD GUndam is the SD Gundam Cross Silhouette F-Kunoichi Kai, but the one obscured in the darkness reminds me of the RX-121-2P Gundam TR-1 [Hazel Owsla] Gigantic Arm Unit (Link). The hands are a giveaway.
